Ever wonder about the folks who lead the singing each week?
The “Singists” are all worship participants at Orangewood and are a delightful group of people from all backgrounds who come together in small groups to sing, laugh, and pray. We are blessed to have a warm spirit of family within the group and are always glad to welcome new people into our ministry. Members have varying degrees of musical experience but share the ethic of personal preparation, which makes rehearsals fun and rewarding.
Each week members pick up the following week’s charts and take them home to review and practice prior to a mid-week rehearsal where we polish up the music and try to glean all we can from the music and the text. To aid them with this process we provide support mp3’s through our worship website for those singing a part other than melody. On Sunday morning, we rehearse with the band and then lead in worship. Our desire is to glorify the Lord and enjoy one another in the process.

Serving Together in Music and Worship
Psalm 150
Let Everything Praise the LORD
Praise the LORD!Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens!
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his excellent greatness!
Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with sounding cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! (ESV)
The worship ministry at Orangewood is composed of wonderful singers, a fantastic band, and brilliant sound and lighting engineers, all working together week after week to offer our best in the worship of our Lord. This week's glimpse into worship focuses on our band.
The overall sound of a group is dependent on the level of musicianship of each member and ours is no exception. The band is made up of professional musicians who have committed to our service at Orangewood-- tremendous guys who love the Lord and us.
Each member is committed to personal excellence in their instrument and it shows. Music is distributed a week in advance and the guys prepare on their own before coming together on Sunday mornings for an intense pre-service rehearsal.
Currently we have Mark on drums, Tony on bass, Luis on electric guitar, Kyle on keyboard, and Dan and Jack on accoustic. It's great to serve with one another in the Worship of our Lord!

Over the next few weeks we hope to introduce you to some of the people who serve in our worship ministry as well as give you a behind the scenes glimpse into the worship planning process here at Orangewood.
Each week we meet as a team and plan the elements of worship based on the vision Jeff has given us for his message series. The meetings entail discussions of the topics, batting around ideas that would fit them, and lots of laughter. We’ve worked together long enough to have found a convivial familiarity that often leads to funny observations and situations that make us laugh loud and long. When planning something as serious as the worship of our Lord, we often find humor in the process. It’s not all fun and games though… often our conversations are serious and we discuss topics and issues that are often hard to grasp. Those times are good too, as they stretch us in our desire to honor the Lord in our worship of Him.
Here’s our team and a little lighthearted info about each one.
Kyle Mattingly – Kyle holds a music degree from UCF, plays the piano, keyboard, and cowbell on Sunday mornings, and arranges all the music for worship. He is married to Sarah, who works in the sound booth during Worship each weekend. In his spare time he likes tennis, racquetball, reading blogs, annoying his dogs, and making neo-classical sculptures with toothpicks.
Jack Michels – Jack attended Pensacola Christian College, serves as our Worship Director, plays the guitar and piano, sings, and leads us in Worship each week. He and his wife, Stephanie, have three sons. Jack is a big-time football fan, but his claim to fame is that he once sat next to Shaq at a basketball game!
Chris Russell – Chris graduated from Full Sail and has been running sound in churches for about 11 years. He is responsible for all things involving sound, lights, and video in worship. Each week Chris brings us the beautiful graphics and visuals that enhance our worship services. He and his wife Kacey have two children, Kaley and Noah. Chris’ hobbies are photography and riding his Harley.
Vicki Taylor – Vicki holds a music degree from UCF with post graduate work from Stetson University. She works with the singers, sings, teaches vocal music at OCS, and plays the cd player. She and her husband Don have three sons and a daughter. In her off time, Vicki likes to garden, get stuck in yoga poses, and play.
Zach Van Dyke - Zach holds a degree in Theatre from FSU, is pursuing a graduate degree from RTS, and is our Student Ministries Director. Zach and his wife Kelly have two sons and a brand new baby girl. Zach’s interests include writing, tennis, and stretching. (It’s what he wrote— I’m not making this stuff up.)
As you can see, we’re a diverse group—a little goofy at times, but we enjoy the camaraderie we have in working together.
Pray for us as we plan and serve!

Engaging Our Hearts and Minds in Worship
What makes a worship service great? Is it the music, the preaching, the lighting? Or is it something more?
According to the Book of Common Worship, “Worship is at the very heart of the church’s life. All that the church is and does is rooted in its worship. The community of faith, gathered in response to God’s call is formed in its worship. Worship is the principal influence that shapes our faith, and is the most visible way we express the faith. In worship, through Word and Sacrament, the church is sustained by the presence of Christ. “
When we come together to worship our Lord, we bring him our love and adoration through prayer, music, Scripture, the Sacraments, and the preaching of the Word. In the book of Revelation the host of Heaven worships him with great praise and declarations of His Glory, Majesty, and Power. We have the opportunity to gather together as one Body and offer him our worship with hearts fully focused on Him. In Psalm 22:3 the psalmist says that God's throne is the praise of his people. "Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel."
This past week I had the pleasure of sitting with the congregation during worship, and was thinking of these things when the service started. I found myself hoping for Christ to be present in the room and in my spirit as we moved through the songs and prayers. I thought about Christ singing our praises to the Father with us, and the Father hearing his perfect voice declaring our love and praise, and was reminded of the wonderful grace that covers our sins and allows us to freely sing before the Lord, and marveled that all of Heaven might be singing with us.
"To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, and to devote the will to the purpose of God."
William Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury
My heart is challenged to consider these things as I enter to worship this week. I pray that my mind and heart would both be engaged so that I might truly experience God’s holiness, truth, beauty, love, and purpose. May it be so for all of us.

Come, Let us Worship...
Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for He is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under His care. (Ps. 95:6-7)
"God is not moved or impressed with our worship until our hearts are moved and impressed by Him." Kelly Sparks, worship leader, Raliegh, NC
Each week we meet together to worship our Lord and Creator. Sometimes the service is upbeat, other times reflective, but each time we strive to give our adoration, praise, and love to the Lord of All.
This blog is to help the worshipper at Orangewood know more about our planning process, the members of our team, and the thoughts and ideas we have as we craft each week’s service. We hope it will also serve to help the Body of Christ at Orangewood come expectantly into the house of God, hoping to experience the presence of the Lord in our midst as He inhabits our praise.
Because of God’s great love for us, we have the ability to honor and bless the Lord in our worship. Just as a loving child brings joy to a parent’s heart, so we can bring the gift of our love and worship to our Heavenly Father when we worship Him out of hearts filled with love and gratitude. He is with us and rejoices over us.
Zephaniah 3:17
The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing."
Be encouraged, He truly does sing over us.
